Whats A Decent Price For Carpet Installation?
I am finishing my basement now and will be ready for carpet in a few weeks. The basement is 480 sq. ft. and 1 staircase that will also be carpeted. I just want the basic run of the mill carpet. I got a quote from empire last night for $1050. I was wandering if this was a decent price or if there was somewhere else to that might be cheaper. Thanks.
Answers:
You do not mention what state you live in. Pricing varies. But here goes my thoughts.
480 sf divided by 9 sf to a yard is 53 1/3 yards, but carpet usually is in 12 ft wide so you probably will use somewhere around 56-58 yds to cover the basement floor.
Staircase – you said one, is that one step or a flight of steps? If it is a flight of steps, how many? Say you have 14-16 steps each 3′ x 1′- this may take an additional 8-10 yards of carpet.
We now have approximatley 64-68 yards of carpet. You were quoted $1050. This is approximatley $15 per yard. If this price includes carpet, padding (or glue down), installation and taxes – this is a very good price in any state. But if it is only for carpet that means you will still need to pay for installation!
Your budget should decide. Empire is ALWAYS on the high side from anyone else, so I would suggest giving us a call so that we can discuss in detail and save you some money.
How Do I Paint Over Kitchen Cabinets That Are Glazed With Polyurethane?
The kitchen cabinets have a glaze on them. I want to paint them a different color. The cabinets are for a school cafeteria so it doesn’t have to be perfect. What is the cheapest way to paint them over? Should I sand it first?
Answers:
You might try using a product like TSP/90 Heavy Duty Cleaner. Sanding is quite the chore. TSP cleans & prepares surfaces for repainting. There is also a product called ”deglosser” that may work. Also there is a paint called ”cabinet coat” just for painting cabinets/furniture to leave a real smooth finish. Yes, and first or the paint will not stick, use a primer then paint, you are good to go … You could spray paint them but may get spendy if there are several as in more than 7 or 8 good luck
Zinser 123 is a primer that you could put over that without having to sand first. Then just topcoat with a semi or high gloss latex paint.
Carpet Installation Question?
I had carpet installed in my home in May 2006. My husband supervised, so I didn’t see it till it was done.
I will try to describe what I think is a problem.
There are several areas in the home where the carpet meets up to the tile. Therefore it was cut, and glued down onto a tack strip.
It is QUITE obvious that the padding under the carpet was cut back about 4 inches away from the tack strip. Therefore making a visible ‘divit’ from where the pad ends underneath the carpet, to where the carpet meets the tack strip and tile. I find this visually undesirable. I would like to see a smooth and flawless transition from the carpeted area to the tile.
Also, you can feel the prongs of the tack strip with your bare feet if you step on it….because there is no pad there I suppose. But it has cut the bottoms of my 17 month old daughters feet as she walks across the thresholds from tile to carpet.
Is this installation technique normal? I’ve not seen the prob B4. Should I request a fix?

How Do I Mount Kitchen Cabinets On A Concrete Block Wall?
I have a duplex that was built in the early sixties, it is a concrete block house. I am getting ready to install new kitchen cabinets and I have run into a dilemma, that being 2 of the walls that have cabinets on them are plasterboard over the exterior block. What is the best way to mount them without having to worry about them falling off the wall. I was thinking of using Tapcon screws but I’m worries about how they will look. Any advice would be wonderful. thanks in advance all.
Should I Replace My Kitchen Cabinets Or Just The Cabinet Doors?
We live in a 100 year old house (and the kitchen cabinets look it). We are planning on selling in a few months and want to update the kitchen. Should we replace the cabinets or just the doors? BTW it’s a small kitchen – it’s an L shape 5 feet x 6 feet.
How/where To Install Kitchen Cabinets: Directly On Wood Subfloor Or On The Tile?
My kitchen has been gutted. The walls, the electrical, and the wood subfloor has been preped. Should the base cabinets be installed directly onto the wood subfloor (my house has a 3 to 4 foot crawl space…not concrete slab), or should the kitchen floor be tiled first and then install the base cabinets on top of the tile? What is the proper way to do it? Thanks in advance for your answers.
How Best Can I Get The Builder’s Dust From The Flooring Before Carpet Installation ?
Just had a house built and the last thing is the carpet installation. The plywood flooring has been vacuumed several times but there is still dust and grime embedded in the plywood and on the surface. I was wondering if using a carpet shampooer (not the scrubber, just the wet vacuum wand) with just warm water would help clean the surface from dust. Will the water harm the plywood flooring at all or make a pasty mess? I am somewhat intolerant of dust and would like to prevent the carpeting from pumping up the dust over the years. Your thoughts are appreciated.
